YAZIO is an all-in-one app: calories, fasting, recipes, water, steps. Luca does one part of that, logging what you ate, and tries to make that part quick.

Where YAZIO is the better choice

  • Recipes and meal planning. YAZIO’s website lists more than 3,000 recipes, and its App Store listing describes meal planning and a grocery list. Luca has no recipes or meal plans.
  • Intermittent fasting. Built-in timers and plans such as 16:8 and 5:2. Luca has no fasting timer.
  • More to track. A water tracker with reminders, step and activity tracking, and with Pro, vitamins, minerals, fiber, sugar and salt. Luca tracks calories, protein, carbs and fat.
  • A searchable database. The App Store listing describes a food database with 4 million+ searchable items. Luca makes no claim about a database size.
  • More devices and languages. The listing shows iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and 20 languages, and the help center describes an Android app. Luca is iPhone only.
  • No sign-up either. YAZIO’s listing says “Instant access with no signup required”, so this is not a point in Luca’s favor.

If you want fasting, recipes and tracking in one place, YAZIO is the better fit.

Where Luca is different

  • A free AI scan every day. YAZIO’s help center says AI photo tracking is now part of YAZIO Pro. Luca’s free plan includes one AI scan a day, and barcode and manual entry are unlimited. See pricing.
  • Voice and text as well as photo. Luca logs from a photo, a voice note, a typed description or a barcode. Useful when a photo is awkward, as in eating out.
  • Where the photo goes. YAZIO’s privacy policy names OpenAI Ireland Ltd. as the provider for its AI functions. Luca sends photos to servers the developer runs, not to a third-party AI provider, and does not store them on the server. Details are on the privacy page.
  • Friends see less. YAZIO buddies see your calorie intake, a macronutrient overview and your current and goal weight, among other things. Luca friends see your display name, avatar, streak, whether you logged and met your goal today, and badges, never calories, macros, meals or photos.
  • Published prices. Luca Pro is $6.99 weekly, $9.99 monthly or $49.99 yearly in the US.

What neither can promise

Photo results are estimates in both apps. YAZIO’s help center says its AI recognition “only provides a rough estimate” and asks you to review and edit your entries. Luca asks the same: check the item list and change any number that looks off. How photo calorie estimation works explains why portions and hidden ingredients are hard for a camera.

Neither app is a medical device, and nothing here is medical or dietary advice. Calorie and macro targets are general information, not a plan made for you.

Questions

Is Luca a YAZIO alternative?

Partly. Luca covers the calorie and macro side on an iPhone: a photo, a voice note, a typed description or a barcode gives an estimate you can edit. It does not replace YAZIO's recipes, meal planning, fasting timers, water tracker or its Android, iPad and Apple Watch apps.

Do Luca and YAZIO need an account?

Neither requires one. YAZIO's App Store listing says instant access with no signup required, and its privacy policy describes an anonymous account that can later be given an email and password. Luca has no account, sign-up or email at all, and uses an anonymous identifier.

Is AI photo tracking free in YAZIO or Luca?

YAZIO's help center says its AI food recognition was initially free for all users and is now part of YAZIO Pro, as checked on 5 October 2026. Luca's free plan includes one AI scan a day, with unlimited barcode and manual entry. Luca Pro removes the daily limit.

Who analyzes the meal photos?

YAZIO's privacy policy names OpenAI Ireland Ltd. as the technical service provider for its AI functions and says the data is not used to train OpenAI's general models. Luca sends photos to servers the developer runs, not a third-party AI provider, and does not store them on the server.
