Lose It! has been around since 2008, and it shows in how much it covers. Luca is a much smaller app with one main idea: photograph the meal, get an estimate, fix what is off.

Where Lose It! is the better choice

  • A very large food database. The Lose It! support center describes a 50M+ food database in the free Basic tier. Luca makes no claim about a database size.
  • More devices. The App Store listing shows iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and the website links to an Android app. Luca is iPhone only.
  • More than calories and macros. Premium adds vitamins and minerals, water, sleep, blood pressure, body measurements, intermittent fasting and meal targets, according to the App Store listing. Luca tracks calories, protein, carbs and fat.
  • Device syncing. Premium syncs with fitness trackers and scales such as Fitbit, Garmin and Withings.
  • Community. You can add friends and join groups in the community tab.
  • A lifetime option. Lose It! Lifetime is a one-time purchase that unlocks Premium with no renewals. Luca Pro is a subscription only.

If you want one app for food, exercise and long-term records across several devices, Lose It! is the better fit.

Where Luca is different

  • One free AI scan a day. Lose It! lists photo, voice and barcode logging under Premium. In Luca the free plan includes one AI scan a day, and barcode and manual entry are unlimited.
  • Four ways to log. Photo, voice, a typed description or a barcode, each ending in numbers you can edit. See barcodes for packaged food.
  • No account. No sign-up and no email. The app uses an anonymous identifier.
  • Where the photo goes. Photos are sent for analysis to servers the developer runs, not to a third-party AI provider, and are not stored on the server. Meals live on the device, and in your iCloud if you have it enabled. Read the privacy page.
  • Friends see less. Friends, added by a 4-character code, see your streak, whether you logged and met your goal today, and your badges. They never see calories, macros, meals or photos.
  • Small and focused. A daily ring, macro targets, recent and favorite meals, streaks, badges, reminders, and widgets on the Home Screen and Lock Screen. The full list is on the features page.

What neither can promise

A photo gives an estimate in any app. Portion size, cooking oil and hidden ingredients are hard to see, so check the items and adjust the numbers before you trust a total. Database entries and barcode data can also be incomplete or out of date.

Neither app is a medical device, and nothing on this page is medical or dietary advice. Calorie budgets and macro targets are general information. For anything that touches a health condition, talk to a qualified professional.
