Terms of Use

These terms apply when you use the Luca app for iPhone and the service behind it. Luca is published by Ege Beşe, an individual developer ("we", "us"). By using Luca you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

What Luca is

Luca is a food log. It estimates the calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat in a meal from a photo, a spoken or typed description, or a barcode, and keeps a record of what you log on your device.

Estimates, and not advice

  • Results from photos, voice and text are estimates produced by AI, with calories and macros calculated from a nutrition database where the food is recognised. They are approximate and can be wrong. Check them and adjust them.
  • Packaged food data comes from an open database that volunteers maintain. It can be incomplete or out of date. The label on the product is the authority.
  • Luca is not a medical device. It does not provide medical, nutritional or dietary advice, and it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Nothing in the app or on this website is a promise about weight, health or any other outcome.
  • Do not rely on Luca for decisions where an error could harm you, for example managing diabetes, allergies, a medically prescribed diet, pregnancy or an eating disorder. Talk to a qualified professional.

No account

Luca needs no account. Your meals are stored on your device, and in your own iCloud if you enable it. If you delete the app or lose the device without iCloud, we cannot restore your meals, because we do not have them.

Luca Pro: an auto-renewing subscription

  • What it is. Luca Pro removes the free plan's limit of 1 AI scan a day. A scan is one AI estimate from a photo, a spoken description or a typed description. The free plan keeps unlimited barcode scanning, label reading and manual entry.
  • Price and period. In the United States Luca Pro costs $6.99 per week, $9.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Prices vary by country and may include tax; the price in your currency is shown before you confirm the purchase.
  • Payment. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
  • Renewal. The subscription renews automatically for the same period and at the same price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.
  • Cancelling. You can cancel at any time in Settings on your iPhone: your name, Subscriptions, Luca. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Luca Pro until the end of the period you have paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
  • Refunds. Purchases are made through Apple, and refunds are handled by Apple under its terms: reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • Price changes. If the price of your subscription changes, Apple will tell you beforehand and, where required, ask you to agree.
  • Fair use. "Unlimited" means there is no daily count. Fair-use limits apply: to keep the service working for everyone we may slow down or briefly limit scanning that is automated or far beyond personal use.

Friends and challenges

You choose your own display name. Do not use a name that impersonates someone, or that is abusive or unlawful. We may remove such a name or a friends profile that is used to harass others.

Acceptable use

Do not use Luca to break the law, to send content you have no right to send, to probe, overload or reverse engineer the service, or to access it other than through the app.

Ownership

The app, its design and the Luca character belong to us. Your meals and photos belong to you.

Availability and changes

We try to keep Luca working, but we do not promise that it will always be available or free of errors. We may change or remove features. If a change materially reduces what a paid subscription gives you, you can cancel and ask Apple for a refund.

Disclaimer and liability

Luca is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we exclude warranties that are not written here, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for decisions you make on the basis of an estimate. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or the rights you have as a consumer where you live.

Apple

These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content and has no obligation to provide support for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms as they relate to your use of the app, and Apple's standard licensed application end user license agreement applies where these terms are silent.

The Privacy Policy explains what data Luca handles and how to delete it.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change in a way that matters, the date at the top changes. If you keep using Luca after that, the new terms apply.
